Food for not eating?


An article from the NY Times suggests that garlic can cure Athlete's Foot. My question for you -- other than eating, for what other reason do you use food?

  1. Food has long been a great source of clothing dye. My Grandmother has my Father buy her favorite sneakers in white she then makes a 16 quart pot of tea to dye her new sneakers a sandy tan she likes better than any of the colors the company offers. Berries , nuts and plants also make excellent clothing dyes. There are many great web sites that inform the reader of the many botanical items and the colors each natural item imparts. In addition the is a growing movement in America for holistic medicine. Over the summer I came down with a powerful cold just before a planed camping trip, my step mother got me a bottle of grape seed extract, oregano oil extract and echinacea with goldenseal to fight off the cold. I don't know the science , but I did recover much faster than I normally would have from the same type of bug. Food has more uses than the modern era allows for and in the case of dyes when we are done using the mixture throwing it out or pouring it out is much less harmful for the environment than the chemical versions found on store shelves.     I have to admit, eating is one of my favorite things to do, but close to it ismy passion for cooking. When I think about food as a cook, I believe it to be a form of expression. If its executed properly, than something more than flavor has been offered. More than just taste, the smell of roasted vegetables can intoxicate you, the sound of a sizzling steak could resurface memories or create one. I see food as a way to communicate with someone without speaking, and show them how we feel, or how we want them to feel. "Culinary communication"

  3. Food not for eating:

    As a child, I grew up in a totally organic house hold—Vinegar was used to clean the floors, and we used olive oil for WD-40. Odd.. yes I am fully aware. Environmentally friendly probably.
    Olive Oil—
    Yes Olive oil is wonderful to cook with, use as salad dressings ect. But do you know of how many other things that you can use it for?
    -Shave. Olive oil can provide a closer shave when used in place of shaving cream.
    - Shine stainless steel. Many cleaning standbys, such as ammonia, can dull and even corrode chrome and stainless steel. Olive oil, however, is a safe and effective shining agent. Never mind how horrid they are to the environment and to breath in.
    - Remove eye makeup. Dab a little under the eyes and rinse off with a washcloth, it is pretty much the same thing you would purchase in the grocery store, just no chemical added.
    - Moisturize. Apply a small amount of olive oil to the nail beds, over cracked hands, or heals, or Rub a thin layer over the skin after a shower or a waxing.
    -Dust wooden furniture. Apply a bit of oil to a cloth and wipe also great for preserving leather.
    - Silence squeaky doors. Lubricate hinges by applying a small dab to a cloth, then wiping the top of the hinges so that the oil runs down the sides.

    There are many alternative uses for lemons, baking soda, vinegar, and many other things. Please remember these, and keep your mind open when you go to reach for the chemicals!!!

  4. We use food in a large number of ways. Such as social events, medical uses, and, for me at least, to relax even. I love using food as a social gathering, it is a chance to get friends together and to even show off a little. As for medical some foods have been shown to fight diseases and some cancers. For relaxation when ever I've had a hard day nothing helps to relax me like coming home, playing some music, and just cooking a meal that I know my family will love.

    In my house, we have all the dried chiles hanging in vine form around the kitchen, and our garden in the backyard is a constant source of effort and enjoyment. Food is the reason many of my friends would come over to hang out, so many of my fondest memories were because of food.

  6. Medicinal, be it antibacterial or homeopathic is a great alternative use for food. People also have referenced social communication through cooking and the possible "all in one" utility of olive oil. However, lets not forget food is used as a medium in art. Almost every school child at one point or another is given the task of creating a necklace out of some sort of dried pasta, and the more advanced student might even tackle legume mosaics. Hopefully as we get older,our focus advanced from using food to make art into creating art through the manipulation and cooking of food.

    Food apart from eating has many other uses. Ayurveda an ancient form of Indian medical science uses many of the natural ingredients as medicine to cure health problems.For example turmeric is used as a antiseptic for cuts and wounds. Honey is used for burns. Food is also used as a display in social gatherings, it is a good way for chefs to show their carving skills.
    Egg and yoghurt are used as hair conditioners.
    Lemon and salt a very good metal cleaners, you can polish copper,aluminium and stainless steel.
    Apart from these there are many other uses of food , but these are the few I have used, or some one else has used in my presence.

  8. many forms of food today is being used for many different uses such as honey based chapstick, oatmeal based shampoo, and althletes foot cure of garlic. more specificly, humans have been using consumable goods for medicine since the begining of time.
    Many cultures around the world use food as a social events to gather friends and family or special events such as proposing.

    What comes to mind for me after reading the topic is comfort. I think alot of people use food as a comfort tool. A pint of Ben & Jerry's after a bad day. A grilled cheese sandwich to remind you of the one's Mom used to make. Food brings back memories and feeling long since remembered. I can surely relate to that. Many times I've found comfort and pleasant memory in food. I'm not going to say that it's the healthiest of resources, but I will say it is a common one.

    I think of food, and right away I think of family, good times, and friends. Beside needing food as nourishment, in my house, and I am sure in many others, we used food or the dinner table to bring us closer. Sitting down to eat is the time of day where we aren't distracted with the stresses of our day. It is an opportunity to vent and relieve the very stresses in our day, it is our time to restore our well being.

  11. This is a big question, I feel one could write a thesis about this topic. Food can be used for so many healing properties. I have read that basil and lemongrass are supposed to repel mosquitos, lavender is a calming herb, and aloe helps calm sunburns. Olive oil is moisturizing for the skin and hair, salt is healing, brown sugar or coffee grounds and oil are great exfoliators, and baking soda helps rid of smells, whiten clothes, and pick up stains from counters. As said above, vinegar is a cleaner and helps heal bug bites. I am sure this is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of alternative uses for food, but a good article to promote thinking outside the box.

I believe that food can be used in a variety of ways besides just cooking it. one way is Art if you set up a dish or bake a cake you can tell a story from what you make, just look at all the cake shows on television now, they are using food to create some of the craziest things i have ever seen. also food is used to bring back memories if my mom is cooking chicken soup it just reminds me of the days that i was young and she would make me soup so i felt better and i usually would so i guess you can say food heals illnesses.

  13. I love using kosher salt to both scrub my cutting boards as well as exfoliating my hands after working with aromatics. Lemon juice and salt combined works great to get rid of odorous hands after working with garlic and onion. Many foods are made into concentrates and tablets for medicinal purposes. For example, my dad gets really bad gout, so I went and got him black cherry capsules because black cherries serve as natural remedies for gout (or dark berries in general). The problem is that you have to consume a lot of dark berries in order for it to work, so the capsules are much more efficient. Coffee grinds as well as vegetable scraps are great to make compost for the garden! Making a paste out of baking soda and applying it to bee stings is also a great trick (especially when your sister is whining). Organic coconut oil is also great for conditioning skin and hair as well as clearing up blemishes! Food is fun all around!!

Many of the spices used in Ayurvedic cooking such as turmeric, ginger, cumin, fenugreek, coriander and cardamom, amongst others, are also medicinal herbs used in Ayurvedic herbology. Cooking daily with those spices can greatly enhance digestion, absorption and assimilation of food, improve one's appetite and elimination, nourish the internal organs. Food has also been used for skin and hair. Eggs, coffee, lemon juice, yogurt are perfect for lustrous and strong hair. While applying apples,saffron, milk, honey,almonds,cucumber have been used for a youthful and glowing skin. Cleopatra use to bathe with rose petals and goat's milk. Food also creates a bond between people. It is a topic of conversation to stimulate all 5 senses. It has mystical and magical elements to be explored, if the use of all 5 senses are trained to be reawakened in a perfect harmony and balance. It was a way of life holistically....

  15. One of the most interesting uses for food is spiritual. It has been used to ward away vampires, cleanse a home, release bad spirits from inhabiting a body. Food is just one use of an object that can be used for many things. Healing, spiritual, medicinal, all are properties that food can take on. It is truly interesting.

  16. Baking soda has recently come back into toothpaste. There is also baking soda in some cat litters. Speaking of cat litters, there is a new cat little that is made of pure corn. Apparently you can eat the unused stuff. It is a really obsorbant substance too.

  17. I understand the idea of this and using different things to get rid of a fungi, but who decided that using garlic is a good idea? If it works I am all about using it but what are the side effects of using this and wouldn't it make your feet smell? I feel like athletes foot isn't a huge totally life changing issue where we need to rub garlic on it. Get some lotion and your okay.

  18. In order to understand the full advantage we can obtain from the food that we eat, we have to understand it's chemical makeup. Many spices and herbs have been known to work as wonderful medicines before we ever had prescription drugs. When we eat something, we use the vitamins and minerals that have been absorbed through the plant (and therefore absorbed into our bodies) to help aid our bodies' natural processes.

    Some examples of common foods that I use to treat ailments:

    One of my favorite foods that is homeopathic (as well as super delicious) is honey. Honey has a natural anti-inflammatory affect, so one can use it to soothe/heal wounds, calm down a sore/scratchy throat, or even aid with the healing of stomach ulcers. It is also an anti-histamine and has been known to calm down (and maybe even cure) the adverse effects of asthma.

    When I had my wisdom teeth taken out, I used clove oil to numb the pain associated with a dry socket. This spicy concoction contains eugenol, which is a natural antiseptic that relieves pain. I've also read that diluted clove oil in water can stop vomiting and clove tea can treat nausea.

    When I'm stressed out, I often turn to lavender or chamomile to destress. Chamomile in particular has an anti-anxiety effect on me (as well as many other people), so when I feel overwhelmed, I tend to brew myself a hot cup of chamomile tea (with lots of honey of course) to calm myself down. Chamomile can also be used as a topical oil to relieve joint pain.

    The scent of lavender alone is something I can use to relieve stress and anxiety. Before I go to bed, I typically take a shower. I use a lavender soap to wash my hair and body in order to settle myself down before I go to bed. I have issues with calming my mind before sleeping, and lavender helps greatly.

    Aloe vera is another great natural remedy! I most often will take a chunk of the aloe I grow, rip it open and rub the flesh of the plant directly on a burn I've attained from either the sun or mishaps in the kitchen. I also enjoy purchasing an aloe beverage from an health/Asian market in order to help with digestive issues that are usually associated with inflammation, like heartburn.

    Long before modern medicine, there were shamans who would use the earth (and crazy, holistic rituals) in order to heal the sick. Now, one can typically go to a pharmacy and find a chemically-produced supplement that could work just as well, if not better than what we can attain from the earth. However, I find that only taking a pill is not good enough. I fully enjoy taking the time to heal myself with small rituals such as making myself a cup of tea. I feel like the if I make a physical and mental connection to what I consume or use, then I will have a better understanding as to how it will help me heal.

    I think that it isn't "food" that we would be using, its the nutrients. Avocados are great for skin masks because they have so many vitamins, along with olive oil that helps soften your hair. Cucumbers are cool and refreshing on eyes, the acid from lemon can help lighten hair tone. Salt has a great texture to help exfoliate skin and the caffeine in ground coffee beans can help tighten skin. There are many uses for food items, and experimenting is one of the fun parts!

  21. Not to sound like too much of a hippe, but when ever I'm sick I try not to take medicine because I have no idea whats actually in it. So i look to nautral or homeopathic ways instead.
    Somethings like oatmeal make great face maskes when combined with coconut milk. Goats milk makes great soap because of its enzymes that then get absorbed into your skin. Ginger pills can be taken to reduce the symtoms of vertigo, and cranberry pills help fight infection.
    Sillier things to do with food are hair care. Squeezing fresh lemon juice in your hair before laying in the sun willhelp bleach it. And to better condition your hair you can use mayonaise or eggs and let them soak before showering. (no I have never done that.) A good amount of ethnic hair care products also contain olive oil and carrots.
