What is your comfort food?

A reporter recently wanted to know my opinion on comfort foods -- so I'm posing two questions: 1) what is your comfort food & 2) why do you think this is so? Once we have a number of suggestions, we can start posing a theory! (I'm not even going to post a photo to try and influence you!

  1. Comfort food can vary from different people and their backgrounds. It can start from eating a warm stew or just going out and eating any type of dessert. If anyone is like me they stick to their culture for comfort foods. My comfort food would probably be lasanga. The combination of meat, pasta, and a multitude of cheeses just warms my heart. It brings me home everytime I eat it, even if I'm far away. My mom's lasagna is my favorite, of course. But the meaning behind it and the comfort from the ingredients makes my tummy smile. :)

  2. My comfort food has to be a nice bowl pack of Pho Beef Lemongrass soup. The flavors are extremely intense, yet they taste so simple. Whenever I eat this soup, I cant seem to hold back a smile. The purity of this soup gives me a comfort that I cant find anywhere else. It is my rainy day go to.

  3. I would have to say that my go-to comfort food would be a cheeseburger. Whenever i'm looking for a food to make me feel good and just relax at a restaurant with good friends, a nice, juicy, cheeseburger (sometimes with bacon!) is what i relate my own comfort to.

  4. Comfort foods are foods that bring back fond memories, in many cases childhood memories. My comfort food would have to be my Nana's chicken salad sandwich. But for me it is not just a sandwich. My Grandmother makes her homemade white bread, roasts a chicken for the extra flavor and adds all her specialty ingredients. The reason for this "simple" meal is because yes it is simple yet purely delicious and makes me feel at ease. Whenever I eat this I am usually at a table full of all my cousins, my Nana telling us to eat more, and just talking about anything and everything we can think about. The atmosphere when eating the sandwich makes me feel at ease, which is why my Nana's chicken salad sandwich is my comfort food!

  6. The word comfort is all I need for influence!
My comfort food is New England Clam Chowder. This traditional soup hits my heart every bite i take, reminding me of my Massachusetts family and my early childhood. I enjoy thinking back to "the old country"

  7. MS834595: My comfort food is chicken noodle soup. It is chicken noodle soup because it contains chicken and pasta which are two of my favorite items to eat, and it is just what I think of when I am stuck at home sick and want to eat something. It is warm, hearty, filling, with great vegetables, great flavor; how could you ask for more.

  8. My comfort food is spaghetti. I consider this my comfort food because i know that this is my dish that I can not mess up and everyone will love. It was the first dish I "mastered." I mean there is always room for improvement, but where I am at now i do believe it is pretty excellent.

  9. My comfort food would be a spicy papaya salad with sticky rice because I have been eating them for my whole life. It's a tradition Laotian and Thai dish that has contrasting flavors between spicy and sweet. My whole family has been making this dish for generations and has past it down to me. At first, I wasn't a fan of this dish because it was too spicy for my pallet but as I kept eating them, I am now addicted to them. The papaya salad consisted of shredded green papaya and carrots, Thai bird chilies, Thai mint, Thai Basil, fish sauce, soy sauce, lime juice, sugar, salt, and pepper. The flavors to the salad are ranged from spicy, sour, salty, and sweet. The sticky rice is made using a traditional Laotian rice steamer. The rice itself has more starch than other rice product. If I had the ingredients right now, there is no doubt that I would be making this dish any time soon.

  10. My comfort foods are apples and candy. I think these are my comfort foods because I have always grown up eating apples and their crisp crunch, sweet taste and juiciness help me to relax. Candy is one of my comfort foods because when I was little we were solemnly allowed to eat it for various reasons. The first being that I have 3 siblings, if we wanted candy all of us had to have it, the second was that our parents didn't want to expose us to very unhealthy foods and the third being that hyperactivity would have ran rampant throughout the house.

  11. I would say my favorite comfort food is my mother's chicken noodle soup. It brings me back to a better time... My childhood. I mean, just say the words Chicken Noodle Soup without getting that nice, warm, settling feeling in your stomach. Your mom makes you soup because you have the sniffles or the flu and you automatically feel better. Plus the best comfort foods are usually the simplest.

My comfort food depends on my mood. It's complicated because I never grew up on one food since my dad raised me on bachelor food like potatoes and steak, then my mom moved from Russia and served borsch so my background is pretty diverse. So i think it is really hard to come up with one food, but the main idea would be the food that they were raised with. I grew up eating those foods, so they remind me of my childhood. It also depends on your definition of comfort food. To me, it is what reminds me of childhood. Some people might think that it is what is really rich and they eat when they aren't watching weight.

  13. My favorite comfort food in the world would have to be Village Trattoria in Maplewood NJ. The chefs put together a series of "specialty slices". you can get pizza with anything from pasta to shrimp, to salad, to chicken fingers and fries. You can mix and match different slices depending on your mood.

  14. Ever since I could remember, eating pasta with my family ever Sunday has been a tradition the my family has done for years. Sleeping in and waking up to the scent of deliciously stewed pasta sauce, containing meatballs, sausages, and lamb, while watching the New York Jets play makes for a perfect day. This will always be my comfort food.

  15. My comfort food is instant noodle. When there's nothing much to eat in home and when I don't have apetite to eat something, I usually select noodles. It is also easy to make and easy to buy. I like eating noodles in cold or rainy days especially, it makes me warm and full enough.

  16. My comfort food is fish. This is because ever since I was little when ever my family was together we would eat some sort of fish. The fish types would vary but were typically smoked salmon. We would have it for breakfast and all sit around the table and talk when I was younger. Now even though my sisters and I have grown up when ever my father gets smoked salmon we all sit around the table and eat it together. Also when I would go to my grandmothers house she would serve whitefish and my sisters and cousins would all enjoy eating that as well. So when ever I am stressed out I always order a dish with some form of fish.

  17. My comfort food is a typical breakfast in Singapore. It is a slightly sweetened mug of fresh and warm soybean milk with deep-fried fritter sticks (something like Spanish churros). It is the usual breakfast my grandfather or what my parents would have brought me and my siblings to the wet market to have that. The feeling of consuming the warm soybean milk and crunching on the crisp, greasy sticks of fried dough, can never go wrong.

I believe that the root for everyone's comfort food is through memory tapping, nostalgia and emotions. It usually will not be something recent, and usually, it will be something you had for a prolong period of time as a kid or during your college years, maybe something you had it with your loved ones, family and/or friends. The food does not have to be the best tasting judging from a culinary gastronomic sense, but on a personal level, it might have been euphoric.

As suggested, when you consume your "comfort food", it brings back memories of being safe, happiness, being comforted and often you will be transported back in time during the first time you enjoyed that dish so much. It may also suggest a moment of being comforted as an innocent child, when every small act and item meant so much more, and after consuming that "comfort food", you are being reminded of the "good ol' times" when everything seems so much more rosy. It probably brings comfort from the stark contrast to your current grown up commitments and responsibilities in life right now. Therefore comfort is derived, as these comfort food either brings back good memories, or provide the sense of contrast in lifestyle that you can reminisce when the times were better.

  19. My comfort food would have to be borscht. I have grown up with this soup being served with almost every dinner meal. Being a little kid at first I did not like the soup, but over time I have grown to love this dish. I love the texture of the soup and the taste is just phenomenal. This soup is a great dish to start of any meal and just great by itself. Whenever my mother makes it, everyone flocks to the table and is eager to dig in and chow down.

  21. Cereal has always been more to me than a quick pick-me-up in the morning. Most people enjoy the high sugar rush and the delightful workout their masseter muscles receive as they crunch on Frosted Flakes or Honey Nut Cheerios. However, I adore indulging in the sinless snack of Original Fiber One or a generic brand of Bran Flakes at any time of day. The fact that I am eating healthy cereal and filling my stomach at either breakfast or midnight gives me a satisfaction unknown elsewhere.

  22. Since I am from Texas, now living in New York, my comfort food which brings me back home is tex-mex food. A big burrito with slow braised meat, spanish rice, lime sour cream, black beans, shredded lettuce, cotiha cheese, guacamole, and a fresh tortilla makes my mouth water and my stomach rumble. I could have one 6 times a day.

My comfort food is a roasted chicken. My mom always used to make the best roast chicken for our meal, almost once a week. It was always one of my favorites. Because of its frequency and because of its quality, I associate a roasted chicken with the feeling of home, warmth and being cared about. If thats not a comfort food, I don't know what is.

  24. My comfort food is chicken pot pie. I grew up in a house hold where if I wanted a home cooked meal, I was the one in charge of making it. My family members are not the biggest cooks. My dad's idea of a meal is boiling pasta shells in v8 juice, adding a hunk of butter and ground pepper. Lucky for me, my grandma Marcie does like to cook and she was a wonderful teacher in the kitchen. Whenever she would come for a visit we were always found in the kitchen cooking together. Chicken pot pie was the first dish that I ever made solo. Whenever I see that savory little layer of flaky puff pastry, surrounding a treasure trove of: carrots, peas, potatoes chicken and celery, swimming an inviting glossy gravy. I am taken back to that first bite, slow grin, and warm praise from my grandma Marcie.

  25. I would have to say my comfort food is a nice, hot bowl of cream of broccoli soup. To me, comfort food is something that warms the body, the palate, and the mind, but I don't mean temperature wise. It just makes you feel good, whether you're eating it at home, curled up on the couch, or at work, or even with family. This soup is one of my favorites because it's soothing and delicious. :) - 826068

  27. In my house we have a special dish designated to only one meal, Sheprads pie. My Mama makes it with groud turkey and loads of herbs on the bottom, and the next layer is peas and corn, topped with chive mashed potatoes. Its not elaborately prepared nor diplayed, but it is so good. I've never had he largest appetite but for some reason this is the one food I can go back for seconds.. or more. I think a few things that help me to define a comfort food are low cost, easily prepared (in relation to haute cuisine that is), and i think it has to be linked with a memory. Also, everytime I come home from school for the weekend my mama breaks out the sheprads pie dish.

  28. One of my comfort foods would have to be moose soup.It is a wonderful hearty soup that is great after a cold day. It is a food of my family and of my culture. When ever I eat it I am transported home and I feel a certain sort of connection to my ancestors. It also reminds me of my childhood, a simple and care free time. For me it is not so much the food itself that comforts me, but the memories, family background, and emotions that its aroma and flavor bring back. Moose soup will always have a special place in my heart.

  29. If there was any food that I would consider to be a comfort food I would probably choose ice cream. I remember two years ago every wednesday night I was in the middle of doing my driver's ed classes and afterward I would come home at bout 9:00. When I came home the first thing I would do is get a bowl of ice cream because I had just come from a 3 hours driver's ed class. Most of the time it didn't matter what kind it was as long as there was enough for me in the freezer. After that I would go into my room turn on my computer and my TV. Every wednesday night, I had to catch one of favorite television shows, "LOST", and go on my computer and talk to my best friend, Justin. The combination of the ice cream, tv show and talking to my friend was just a very joyful experience to me, but the thing that made it most comforting was that I knew that the day was over and that I could just rest knowing everything for the day was over and done with. And if I had to pick a favorite ice cream it would definitely be chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream!

  30. My comfort food would have to be traditional Japanese style Ramen noodles dressed up with eggs, fish cakes, vegetables, pork slices, and a miso broth. I believe this is because my Grandmother used to make it for me all the time when I stayed at her house during the summer and winter; I believe it is closer to my heart because it was one of the first things I learned to make and perfect. Moreover, It was a cheap, easy, and filling source of food i could always rely on.

  31. I identify most with manicotti. A ricotta filled tubed pasta, with a traditional tomato sauce and combination of cheeses melted over the top. I grew up having this dish on occasion, and always anticipated diving into them as they were baked in the oven, melty, gooey, creamy, saucy-- delicious. They ultimately remind me of my grandparents. When I was 15, I made them from scratch for the first time. I made a crepe-like 'pasta batter' and cooked the noodles in a crepe pan. I made a ricotta filling with spinach, parmagiano reggiano, mozzerella, and fontina. It was absolutely amazing. Pasta filling is a labor of love, but it is so worth it in the end. I plan on making this dish when I have a family of my own, hoping that my kids will share the same warm and cozy feeling I get when a forkful of manicotti melts in my mouth.

  32. My comfort food is, without a doubt, mac and cheese. It is part of one of my favorite food memories and it because of its simplicity. Its just a cheese sauce and some pasta. Some people like to bake it and cover it in crumbs, some prefer to just add the cheese and serve it all gooey and delicious. Both are fine with me as long as I have plenty of delicious cheese and well cooked pasta in my belly. It is also probably because of the fact that I had it so often as a child that I love this dish so much.
